BIOGRAPHY

Award Winning Nathan Theys British / South African was Born in the Cape Town, South Africa where he studied theatre directing at the New Africa Theatre Association under the South Africa's first female playwright and activist Fatima Dike. He moved to the UK and studied film directing at the London Film Academy working with BAFTA Award winning director Richard Kwietnovsky and Stanley Kubrick's Steady Camera Operator John Ward. Later he was mentored by director Menhaj Huda 'Flash, Batwoman (Marvel) and Kidulthood' and was one of the talents at the Northern Media Open Horizon Talent U.K. Nathan immediately worked for companies like McCann Worldgroup, Century Media Records UK where he directed numerous commercials, music videos for Grammy Award Winning Artists and for clients such as Microsoft, UEFA, Just Eat, Loreal, MASTERCARD, TSB Bank, Nurofen (short-listed for Cannes Lions 2022) including ten commercials for Sun International South Africa’s biggest Hotel chain.

 

Nathan got shortlisted at the Cannes Directors Fortnight Quinzainne Talent and won the Best Script Competition at the Cape Town International Film Festival as well as winning the 'NFVF Development Funding Award' for his feature script 'Ronald' a film about his father who was one of the first persons of colour to have sung opera professionally during the South Africa apartheid era.

 

Nathan went onto direct more than forty short narrative films, some winning awards and others nominated in festivals internationally.

 

In his body of work he directed late British Icon, Sir Donald Sinden in 'Blowing Dandelions', Vuyo Dabula (Netflix Queen Sono) in 'Redemption' and Niamh James (RADA) and Tom Pritchard (The Windsors) in 'Whispers of Smoke'.

 

Nathan also directed numerous children's dramas, one in particular 'iFuture My Future' got nominated for Best Director in the 'International Children’s Film Festival'. His children's dramas got selected as the Official Anti-bullying films by the Anti-Bullying Alliance and National Children's Bureau UK and got programmed at the Picture House Cinemas (Nationally) and the Rio Cinema (Hackney) for schools and youth groups.

 

Nathan seems to be a multifaceted artist directing visual artworks for galleries such as Cortoformo Art Collective in Spain, Access All Areas / Bradbury Studios working on social awareness campaigns, exhibiting works at the Hackney Museum, South London Gallery and the Barbican Cultural Centre in London.

 

He was lead video artist on Access All Areas Award Winning Mad House Re-Exit working with artists (with learning difficulties and disabilities) where he was commissioned to work closely with them for three years producing over fifty pieces of work which was exhibited at the Shoreditch Town Hall and theatres across the U.K.

 

Nathan is currently developing his first directorial debut feature film 'Ronald’ with award winning producer Maynard Kraak.
